Journal To Publish Early Next Week Ihe Journal will publish a holiday edition next week. However, since Mariene and Hayden Benson will be on vaca tion beginning Saturday night, the deadline for news in the issue will be moved up tmtn Saturday at noon. July 4th Shabang Will Be Held At Ball Park Hie Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, sponsored by the Cooleemee Jaycees and Jaycettes, will be held again this vear at the Cooleemee Ball Park Festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. There will be a variety of contests including Greasy pig, 3-legged race, sac race, Indian wrestl ing, Tug *o war and horseshoe. Prizes will be awarded to winners. There will also be pony rides for the kiddies and booths for ring toss, fishing and balloon bursting games for prizes. Tickets will be on sale for "Firecracker" a registered male toy. An admission ticket will be drawn for the four-month-old puppy. "Firecracker" will be on display and tickets can only be purchased during the celebration. A drawing will be held later in the afternoon to determine the winner. The concession stand will remain open all day. Admission will be 25 cents for children and adults SO cents. On Dean's List Two Davie County students the honor roll at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro during the spring semester which ended recently. Gary Brown, new mjnrtff of the Ooofeemee Methodist Church, and his fami ly have arrived in town. He cave his first sermon here Sun- For the past five years Rev. Brown has been minister of Center United Methodist Church in Concord. He is' from RandEeman and a graduate of Duke University and Divinity School. An instructor of the Christian Workers School in the Western North Carolina Methodist Conference. Rev. Brown is especially interested in mental health work. Rev. Brown and his wife, the former Ann Roae, have been married 10 years and have two children. Deborah, 8, and Roger, 7. Retarded Children Spend Week At Mountain Camp Last week is one that will long be remembered by 24 retarded children of Davie County. The children, accompanied by 12 teen-age counselors and four adults, left by chartered bus for Crossnore School last Mon dayjnorning from Davie High They arrived at Croasnore in time for a delicious lanch in the school cafeteria. Wednesday, Jmm 25,1949 This was the first time many of these children had been privileged to visit the famous Tweetsie Rrilroad, and they were thrilled beyond belief. The counselors and adults were equally overjoyed to see the children so excited and hap py. This was the best reward they could ever hope for. This was the first time a group of retarded children from this area have ever been taken on a trip to last this long. Of course it does require much thought for a parent to trust their child with someone elae for audi a long parted of time, «>gM>h»>ny if they be rES* 12 rages 10 Geab When this was first being planned, there were so many capable volunteers eager to go as counselors and chaperoacs that the problems Wfwnt smaller and smaller, even the financial ones. The trip was a complete suc cess and a very rewarding ex perience for the counselors.. There was never « sick child or even a small accident, there was only cxrltcmont and Joy during the entire trip. The children even enjoyed taking hatha, and that is qrite an ac complishment.
